Our challenge was to design and develop a budgeting app that encourages responsible spending without inducing guilt or shame.
This was achieved through empathy-centric messaging and visually uplifting branding. Our team designed and illustrated a family of different cheese-like characters that would help guide the user throughout the app while encouraging them to interact with its primary features.
We wanted the user to walk away feeling a sense of positivity and not financial dread.
Our team was pushed to creatively think of ways to display a user's spending habit without overwhelming them. The competitive research was a key aspect to this project where we explored and dissected other budgeting apps' strategies. Our findings were that many apps often used push notifications as a method to increase user engagement by evoking fear and stress to its users
We opted to design an app that only used positive messaging -- and in many cases humour. In addition, the brand would only use uplifting colours, fun illustrations, and a quirky typeface.
